Soumaya Museum
First of all, as is often the case with contemporary art museums, the unusual shape of the building attracts attention. Because of its appearance, the museum was named “The Anvil”.
Not only the shape of the structure is remarkable, but also its futuristic façade. It consists of 28 curved steel columns, each covered with hexagonal aluminum plates. At the same time there are absolutely no windows in the museum. The absence of windows is not only due to a particular decision of the architect, but also to the fact that the works of art housed here need to be protected from sunlight. Part of the light enters thanks to a small hole between the roof and the upper floor.
This is a private museum that houses the personal collection of the center’s owner, Carlos Slim, and his late wife, Soumaya, after whom the museum is named.
It is worth saying that the Sououmaya Museum is simply enormous. It is one of the largest in the world and the largest in Latin America. The total value of works of art is more than 700 million dollars.
The museum exhibition occupies 6 floors of the building, and it is more than 5.5 thousand square meters. The remaining rooms were given for the auditorium, library, restaurant, various offices and stores.
What to see: The anvil museum features more than 6,000 paintings and sculptures. Among the famous exhibits are classics – Rodin sculptures, paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, and works by modernists – Matisse, Diego Rivera, Monet, Van Gogh. In addition to canvases and sculptures, there are May artifacts and a collection of ancient Mexican coins.
